Why are my permalinks not working?

Question

I've set up a the list filter to allow users to create a permalink but when users browse to a page using these permalinks, the filters still retain their default settings.  The permalink filters are not applied.  Why is this?

Answer

If you have set up your IIS to convert your URLs to all lowercase letters, your permalinks will not work.  SharePoint fields are case sensitive and if your IIS is set to convert URLs to all lowercase characters, you will notice that not only do the permalinks not work, using the regular out of the box SharePoint sorting by clicking on the column header will not work as well.
